Description of Site:

Explain Everything is an interactive whiteboard app that is available for iPad and iPhone. This app, which is best utilized on the iPad (more surface space), allows the students to use their device as a white board, with extra special tools. Explain Everything allows the student to animate, narrate, import, export, and screencast almost everything from anywhere. This app is 100% appropriate for use in the classroom, and can help students maximize their learning potential, especially those with learning disabilities.

Explain Everything can be purchased for $2.99, or at a discounted price if purchased in volume, both without adds. This app would be perfect for a 1:1 device or BYOD school, and could be utilized in all different content areas. This tool would be most appropriate for student in grades 5 and above, however, with direct instruction and close monitoring it could be in the elementary classrooms as well. Due to it's ability to import and export, Explain Everything allows students to collaborate and share their ideas, and finally exporting their final masterpiece as a video, image, PDF, and more.
The video below gives a great snapshot of the features and uses for Explain Everything app.

Educational Uses of Site

As a special education teacher, I use whiteboards often in my classroom. If students need one on one help, we can easily write, erase, and start over in little time. Additionally, if I need a quick check to see who's on task and understanding, students can write their answer down and hold up the boards. Explain Everything takes this traditional white board use to the next level, and then some! Here are some specific uses for the classroom:
  • Presentations: create projects using slides, record your voice, add annotations, and use the pointer while delivering presentation
  • Digital Book Report: use pictures and videos to help describe chapters or specific scenes in a book, as well as adding extra visual support that text doesn't offer
  • Quick check/ Exit ticket: send a quick check to all students, have them write their answers/draw picture and save to the class drive
  • Collaborative group project: students can work together, share ideas, and work outside of the classroom without carrying multiple supplies- it's all available on their device!
  • Review: in lieu of paper and pencil study guides, those same problems can be downloaded as a PDF to the app, and then students can add their own work and answers, even recordings, as you are reviewing as a class

Review of Site

I personally think this is a great app to use in the classroom. It's not a necessity like Google Docs or Calendar, but it certainly is a tool that can improve instruction and student performance. As I begin my journey next school year into the flipped classroom world, I could see incorporating this into daily review. One of my main goals this year is to make sure my students have a thorough understand of the math content and can use it in real world situations. With that being said, I believe the use of an interactive whiteboard is the perfect way to grab the students' attention and harness their inner creativity, all while learning math!
